Hello..I would like to know what the qualifications are for World Cup 2010 and the selection of the countries?

is based on what kind of criteria...This is maybe not just for this WC..but any WC in general.

Thanks in advance.

Countries are not selected (except for the host country). Instead FIFA holds an open competition for the remaining 31 spots.

FIFA is organized by 6 continental "confederations." Each of these confederation has a certain number of spots -- 13 for Europe, 6 for Africa (which includes the one for South Africa as host), 4.5 each for Asia and South America, 3.5 for North America (which includes Central America and the Carribean) and 0.5 for Oceania. (The .5 represents that at the conclusion of the process the winner of Oceania meets the fifth-placed team from Asia and the fifth-placed team from South America meets the fourth-placed team from North America in home-and-away series for the last two slots). For other world championship tournaments, there are a different number of slots per confederation.

Once they have been allocated their slots, each confederation designs its own preliminary tournament to fill its slots. For example, in South America, the 10 member nations compete in a double round-robin beginning some time this fall.

Oceania handles things a little different than the other five confederations. For a variety of reasons, they choose to use one process for determining both their representative in the 2009 Confederations Cup and the play-off for the spot in the 2010 World Cup. The first step of this process will be this summer when all of the nations but New Zealand are competing later this summer in the South Pacific Games. The top 3 teams from that tournament will join New Zealand in a four-team double round robin tournament.

The rest of the confederations have not yet announced how they will structure their competitions but the draw for these confederations will be conducted on November 23rd. The hosts normally make a big media event out of both the draw for the preliminary competition and the draw for the final competition (which will be conducted in November or December of 2009). Typically, Europe divides into a number of groups with the winners of each group getting a spot and most of the runners-up competing in a play-off for the remaining slots (given Europe's 13 slots, my hunch says 8 groups of 6/7 teams each). The other three confederations use a multi-phase process that changes each time.

The deadline has passed for teams to state whether they will enter their confederation's preliminary competition with 205 national teams entering (and only two nations opting not to participate).
