Why should USA care about 'COPPER AMERICA' when we already have the GOLD CUP? |
we deliberately sent a high school team to venezuela after we realised it would be too much for the world if the USA starts winning everything is SOCCER.... You're an idiot!! i say this to people who read this.....dont answer just let this loser keep wasting his time.. USA wouldn't win the Copa America with their best squad.... They should care because this is the tougher competition of the two....Gold Cup is a joke....level of teams you play there are not as strong as the teams you would face in the Copa America... If this team wants to get better....they need to play the best to strive to be the best.... US Soccer Federation are complete Muppets. See now you are crying. By the way: is your avatar a man or a woman. Because the COPA AMERICA has teams that are actually at world class level unlike the Gold Cup. Common now: Guadalupe, Panama, El Salvador, Guatemala each have their individualities but as a team they aren't at world class level. It is not a suprise That USA barely beat Mexico, look at Mexico now they are stepping their game up and they were in the gold cup as well and you don't see them giving up so the US shouldn't have sent their c squad - Your high school team will get SCHOOLED, watch. - The 4-1 loss to Argentina was only the beginning, mkay mate, so keep talking sh!t and see if it pays off. Giving this question more seriousness than it deserves, soccer at the national team level has a degree of weirdness due to the relationship between rankings, continental championships, friendlies, world cup qualifying, and the world cup. The Gold Cup is the confederation championship for CONCACAF. As the winner of the Gold Cup, the U.S. gets a bid to the 2009 Confederation's Cup (the tournament for the 6 confederation champions). However, CONCACAF is probably only the 4th or 5th strongest confederation (it makes for a nice running debate with Asia). The Copa America is the confederation championship for CONMEBOL. Like with the Gold Cup, the winning team from South America will qualify for the 2009 Confederation's Cup. As there are only 10 teams in CONMEBOL, they typically invite two outside teams (this year the U.S. and Mexico) to fill out the tournament. As CONMEBOL is one of the top two confederations (I would personally give the edge to UEFA on depth), this tournament is a chance for the U.S. and Mexico to gain some experience facing top-level opponents. Which gets down to reality-check time. The Gold Cup matters more to the U.S. and Mexico due to the opportunity to qualify for the Confederations Cup. As these tournaments are not being played in coordination with the international calendar, it is more difficult to get players released from their clubs for the competitions. Especially as MLS (unlike other leagues) does not avoid conflicts between club dates and international dates, there is a reluctance on the part of teams to release players for both tournaments. Thus, the U.S. sent their top team to the Gold Cup and their second team to the Copa America. However, just because a player is on the second team today, there is a chance (due to retirements or injuries or improvement by these players) that some of these players will be on the first team by the 2010 World Cup. While the U.S. does not expect to win Copa America (even if it had sent its best players), this tournament is a chance for these young players to demonstrate their potential to the coaching staff and maybe find their way onto the first team for some of next year's qualifying matches for the 2010 World Cup. For the U.S. and Mexico, thus, Copa America is the equivalent of a very strong and very intense series of friendlies. |
