How European Soccer works?

I'm an American who is interested in European Soccer. Does each country play with other countries to determine the champion? Is it like the NBA, NFL, MLB, where each team plays against each other, to determine a championship? For example does Real Madrid play against a team in England to determine who wins the championship? I dunno, im really lost but would like to find out the ins and outs of it? can someone please help?

Each individual country in Europe has its own national leagues. Most countries have different levels of leagues, similar to baseball where there is the top league (MLB) and several classes of minor leagues. The two main differences are (1) there are no affiliations between clubs at different levels in soccer and (2) in most European countries teams at the bottom of each level are demoted to the level below them, while teams that win in lower levels are promoted to the next higher classification. Imagine if the Tampa Bay Devil Rays had to go play as a minor league team this year because they finished in last place last season.

When Real Madrid plays against an English team, you're talking about Champions League or UEFA Cup soccer. These tournaments (as Americans would understand them) include the top teams from each country's top league, and they play the next season against each other for this tournament title (highly prestigious). This happens while they still play in the league in their home country. Imagine the New York Yankees playing in a North American baseball tournament against the top team in the Dominican, Venezuelan, Mexican, and Japanese leagues while still playing the Major League baseball schedule.
