Pipino Cuevas vs. Wilfred Benitez who wins? |
A case of a fight that might have taken place. Two contemporaries. The fight is obviously at welterweight. At their best at this weight. 15 rounds. Even a prime Cuevas would not beat Benitez. Had they fought in 1979 while Cuevas was still sharp Benitez matches his power and surpasses his ability in the ring. The fight would last the distance with Cuevas hanging on at the end. Benitez wins by convincing decision. Benitez fought like a seasoned veteran at a young age. Wilfred Benitez was a master boxer, one of the very best. Cuevas' attack would be too one dimensional. Benitez would dodge Pipinos' bombs, then begin to frustrate and tire Cuevas out with slipping and landing counters; Benitez wins by TKO in the 10th. I have to go with Benitez although it would have been a great fight. The Benitez vs. Palmino fight showed that Benitez could outbox a rugged puncher like Cuevas. If Benitez could beat Palomino he could beat Cuevas Benitez by unanimous decision.Cuevas doesn't have the skill to hang with him. Dam good match up, but I give the edge to Benitez, he moved better, and although Cuevas was a heavy hitter, if Benitez could go 15 with Hearns, he could last against Pipino as well. I just don't see Cuevas out boxing Benitez. Benitez by decison. Tremendous match up. Even though many give the edge to Benitez, I believe that Cuevas, at his prime, would have been fast enough to wait Benitez out and land one of his legendary right hands that would have left Benitez for dead in the middle of the ring..... Great match up, though..... DRAW!!! |
