What is the difference between WBA,WBC,IBF, and WBO? |
I just started getting into boxing...but what is the diff. between all these categories? the only difference really is the names. WBA world boxing association, WBC world boxing council, IBF international boxing federation, WBO world boxing organization..They all rate fighters in the different weight classes and they each have there own "world champion". When a fighter has all the belts, mainly WBA,WBC,and IBF(these three are the main ones) they are known as the undisputed champion. Also, the two fighters that fight in a title fight pay sanctioning fees for that organization. Hardcore fans don't pay too much attention to who holds the belts, because now-a-days they don't mean as much as they used to. A lot of the criticism boxing gets is because of all the different organizations and different weight classes they oraganize. It can make it too complicated for new fans. There is also evidence that some boxers get moved up in the rankings by bribing there way there(there promoters do). A long running joke is that Don King really is the president of the WBA. The WBA is ridiculous because they can have two world champions in the same weight class. If a fighter is the undisputed champ in a weight class, they anoint him super champion, and then have a world champion, its a joke. Having a belt is just a good way to get paid, but not recognized as the real world champ in the fans eyes. My advice is to get the Ring magazine, there rankings and there world champ is as legit as it gets. there's so much more about the different bodies but I would be typeing forever... Holyfield just won a 10 rd fight against Big Lou, I covered the fight for a website. He got caught a few times and even gave up a round or 2, but in going the distance he looked good. He floored Savarese several times. The best shot he threw was his patented hook. The left hook at the end of the 9th round was killer. I will recap the entire fight once we get out interviews. Just the letters...they're all corrupt organizations that get away with sanctioned robbery of fighters! You get all those and you'll be the undisputed champion of that division. Those are your alphabet titles. The letters appear to be different combinations of three from the english alphabet. |
