Would Riddick Bowe have been more sucessful had he not had Rock Newman for his manager? |
It seems strange to me that Bowe picked Newman to manage him when he must have had the pick of anyone after his silver medal at the olympic games. I also wonder if it was Newman that got Bowe to chuck one of his newly won world heavyweight titles rather than fight Lennox Lewis, as it seems odd to me that a newly crowned world champion would do that. He would have been more respected had he just lost to Lewis in his first defence, i feel that by doing that it really affected his career. Also i remember during the press conference pre the Pierre Cotzeer fight Newman saying that all south africans were racist etc he seemed to be more concerened with hype and contoversy rather than anything else and could have guided Bowes career better if he had concentrated on the boxing rather than the hype. Despite haveing an impressive win/ loss record Bowe rarly gets mentioneed in any top ten type heavyweight lists. If he had had a different manager could this have been much different? No, it would not have been more successful. Its true that Newman advised Bowe not to fight Lennox. That was a good career move. Lewis would have KO'ed Bowe just like he did in the Olympics. By not fighting Lewis he prolonged his reign as heavyweight champ. Is this cowardly? Maybe, but because of this Bowe was able to make over 30million dollars in his career. And he still has money unlike other retired fighters who are broke. Bowe's legacy would be even worse if he had fought Lewis and his downward spiral would have happened much earlier in his career. Bowe and Newman do not get along now because of financial disputes but no one can dispute the millions of dollars both accumulated because of their relationship. Nothing to do with his manager it's just that Bowe didn't want to continue training, he simply couldn't or just didn't want to workout anymore. I agree with the fact that Newman wuz alwayz causing trouble some way or another. Bowe should have fought Lennox Loser though, who knows maybe he would have gave Lennox his 1st loss. I heard they had already fought in the past and that Lennox had KO'd him is that true? I don't think anyone could keep Bowe from being a somewhat lazy, happy-go-lucky dude. That's just the way he is. The cat had a world of talent though. I spent quite a bit of time with Bowe a couple of years ago. yes he should have choose a different manager. 2 fights that would have secured bowe legacy. one against lennox lewis. the other agaisnt ray mercer. newman for some reason avoided these fights. bowe reputation suffered. bowe could not have done worse had he go with don king. Bowe would have been the same fighter with or without Rock Newman. He was a talented but lazy fighter. He had all the tools & had Eddie Futch as a trainer & if he couldn't have been a greater champion then I don't know what else would have done it for him. He didn't fight tall fighters well ie: Lennox Lewis & Andrew Golita. He ducked Lennox shamlessly & if Golita had 1/2 a brain he wouldn't have hit Bowe below the chest & won both of those fights!!!! Bowe is one of the most overrated heavyweight champions in the history of boxing!!!!! No. Bowe is the one who has to put the work in to be great and even with Eddie Futch in his corner he did not dedicate himself so he could stay on top. |
