Pound for Pound rankings? |
Has Ring magazine or any major media outlets ever ranked a non-American as P4P champion? It seems almost shameful that Floyd Mayweather holds that title when there are some pretty great 'real' fighters out there like Pac-man and Marquez. Plenty of boxers, past or present, could be nominated as best P4P. But to mention Mayweather in this category is a total disrespect for those boxers, again past or present, who had given their best to fight the best opponent of their time. Mayweather (imho) is nothing but a coward who makes a mockery of the boxing world. To prove my point, here are some of the reasons that I came to this conclusion: a) His latest fight against Dela Hoya shows how Mayweather is afraid of duking it out with the best of them. During the fight, more often than not, he was running around and tried to avoid confrontation in the middle of the ring. He called this as art of boxing or simply as boxing techniques, but his facial expressions suggest otherwise. b) Afraid(avoiding) to fight Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico. c) His undefeated record was padded with weak opponents. If you analyze his record closely, you will find that only a handful of boxers deemed worthy to be called legitimate contenders. In summation, until Mayweather enters the ring against the best of them, and fights instead of avoiding contacts with opponents then he should only be regarded as the best marathon runner inside a 16'x16' boxing ring. as far as non-american fighters go - roberto duran, alexis arguello, antonio cervantes, jose napoles, carlos monzon, wilfred benitez, julio cesar chavez, wilfredo gomez, carlos zarate, and ricardo lopez. these are my p4p rankings 1-floyd mayweather(simply unbeatable) 2-manny pacquiao(beat the best at featherweight) 3-winky wright(was robed against taylor) 4-joe calzaghe(undefeated & record title defenses) 5-ricky hatton(undefeated & faced the best at his weight class) best fighters p4p (imo) Im not sure as i don't read the Ring magazine but with anything like that there is always the possibility of an element of bias towards certain fighters. Also the P4P list will always basically just be a hypothetical list as you cant really prove who is the P4P best its just opinion. Thats one of the reasons why i dont rate the Ring belt thing that highly, that many people go on about on this forum saying its worth more than a world title. I cant see myself how a title presented by a panel can be worth more than a title won in the ring?. I agree though that Pacman and Marquez should be above Mayweather in the list. 1. Floyd Mayweather - Welterweight United States (38 wins, 0 losses, 0 draws, 24KOs) Mayweather outfoxed Oscar de la Hoya in their Las Vegas super-fight to become a five-weight world champion and, despite repeating his intention to retire, a rematch looks likely. 2. Manny Pacquiao - Super featherweight Philippines (43-3-2, 35KOs) Pacquiao won his rubber with Erik Morales and beat Jorge Solis in emphatic fashion. A rematch with WBC title-holder Juan Manuel Marquez is on the cards, but first he meets Humberto Soto in October. 3. Winky Wright - Middleweight United States (51-3-1, 25KOs) Wright outclassed Ike Quartey and is now set to meet former middleweight king Bernard Hopkins in July. 4. Juan Manuel Marquez - Super featherweight Mexico (47-3-1, 35KOs) Marquez gave a counter-punching masterclass in beating Marco Antonio Barrera in March and could rematch with Manny Pacquiao later this year. 5. Rafael Marquez - Super bantamweight Mexico (37-3, 33KOs) Two-weight world champion Marquez rematches with Israel Vazquez in August after which he may opt for a unification clash. 6. Joe Calzaghe - Super middleweight Wales (43-0, 32KOs) Calzaghe destroyed Peter Manfredo in April and is set to fight Denmark's WBC and WBA champion Mikkel Kessler later this year. 7. Ricky Hatton - Light welterweight England (43, 31KOs) Hatton proved his doubters wrong with a stunning win over Jose Luis Castillo and may now get his dream match against Floyd Mayweather. 8. Shane Mosley - Welterweight United States (44-4, 37KOs) Mosley rolled back the years to claim the WBC welterweight belt from Luis Collazo and could now target Oscar De la Hoya or Floyd Mayweather. 9. Bernard Hopkins - Light heavyweight United States (47-4-1, 32KOs) Hopkins surprised many by beating Antonio Tarver on his 175lb debut and is now set to meet fellow America Winky Wright in July. 10. Miguel Cotto - Welterweight Puerto Rico (30-0, 25KOs) Former light welterweight world champion Cotto beat Zab Judah last time out and a clash with the resurgent Shane Mosley would be a massive draw. julio cesar chavez was at the top of most boxing publications p4p list (inc the ring) for several years. probibly from when hagler lost to leonard, to his loss to randall in their first fight. azumah nelson, khaosai galaxy and ricarco lopez are just a few who never quite made it to the top. what are u talking about Floyd has fought lots of big names in the sport you are just not a mayweather's fan u should see some of his fights he faced de la hoya, zab Judah, Jose Luis Castillo and others that are never mention as Floyd says they kept him in the dark |
