Who can tell me who the three old boxers were that Rocky Marciano fought and what was their age at the time.? Louis-37. Had already had 71 fights and didn't fight anyone after Marciano. Walcott-39. Had already had 69 fights and didn't fight anyone after Marciano. Charles-33. Had already had 91 fights and would fight 25 more fights after Marciano I think not fighting after Marciano has more to do with getting busted up by him more than age. Walcott peaked late and was the new champ when he fought Rocky. Louis was the only one who was over the hill, but he was still a very dangerous fighter. Besides, Rocky took it easy on him. Harry Greb had 300 fights and I don't think he started using that as an excuse after fight #90. We all love Rocky, he fought the best there were at the time, but some of the best were old. After His retirement Joe Louis for financial reasons had to make a comeback, whether it be wrestling or boxing, he just had to make some money. He was offered to fight Marciano and he simply could not refuse, he was 37, overweight and far slower than in his championship days and obviously lost to Marciano. Marciano went on to fight Jersey Joe Walcott for the heavyweight title, Walcott was in his 40Th year, Marciano won by KO in The 13th round, then he won the return fight in the 1st round. After defending his title another4 times he then fought "Ancient" Archie Moore, who was accepted by most as being 43 years of age, Rocky won by KO in the 9th round and then relinquished his title. In those days anyone probably over 32 were old, and someone 39 years old were unbelievably old. Today people are not so old at these ages. Understand that or you will miss out on the historical development of boxing, which would be a real pity for up and coming students of boxing. Bluedevil, where are you getting this sh1t that it didnt matter that Patterson and Ali fought Moore when he was older, and it DIDNT seem to matter from. Archie Moore was very much older when these two fought him, we ALL know that, and we all know that it is the politics of boxing that these mis-matches occur, we dont like it but we have to put up with it. and lastly look at the question" Who were the three old boxers that Marciano fought". Are we to tell lies now, or just say, well they were in there forties but that doesnt count because it was our hero Rocky that was fighting them. You know , I think some people on here think Rocky Balboa was the real "Rocky" and not Marciano. I think that explains some of their reasoning. You know I always find these opinions about Marciano interesting seemingly trying to make it seem like his perfect record should be less than it is fighting old men and stuff. I don't really hear too many saying that Bernard Hopkins being old at 42 and if Wright beats him, did he just beat an old man? How about 45 year old George Foreman winning the title against much younger Michael Moorer? Like it or not, Evander Holyfield is doing quite well even at his advanced age and vulnerable old Archie Moore won the lightheavy title when he was about 35 and held it until he was about 45 because he was a great fighter. Joe Louis was past his prime at 37 and took a beating from the Rock but still had about a 10-2 during his comback which ended against the Rock. Walcott was the champion for God's sake so who else was the Rock supposed to fight and he was still dangerous and at his fighting peak at 38 years old. Charles was 2 years older than Rock at 32 years old so he wan't an old man and an outstanding fighter. So Patterson and Ali both fought Moore years after Marciano but I guess that doesn't matter. Marciano was a great fighter that fought the best of his times. |
