How did Pele got his name? What does it mean? |
How did Pele got his name? What does it mean? Yeah his real name was Edson Arantes do Nascimento. He was nicknamed Pele. In Polynesian mythology (specifically: Hawaii), Pele is a goddess of fire, lightning, dance, volcanoes and violence but this is is not related to his nickname. He was originally nicknamed Dico by his family. He did not receive the nickname "Pel茅" until his school days, when it is claimed he was given it because of his pronunciation of the name of his favorite player, local Vasco da Gama goalkeeper Bil茅, which he misspoke "Pil茅". He originally disliked the nickname, being suspended from school for punching the classmate that coined it, but the more he complained the more it stuck. In his autobiography, Pel茅 stated he had no idea what the name means, nor did his old friends. Apart from the assertion that the name is derived from that of Bil茅, the word has no known meaning, although it does resemble the Irish language word 'Peile', meaning football, and the Hebrew word 驻侄旨诇侄讗, meaning "wonder". It is his name. Its his name chap! How do you get your name? Your mom or dad gave it. So did his parents. well no it aint his name his real name is Edson Arantes do Nascimento people called him pele for short like people call Ronaldo de Assis Moreira ronaldinho shorter names pele is just his nickname... his real name is Edson Arantes Do Nascimento. www.wikipedia.org/wiki/pele Nobody really knows. In his autobio he states that his own family gave him the nickname Dico which is common for the name Edson. Pele came from when he played with his friends outside the house. The kids just started calling him that.He said that he did not like and got into lots of fights and apparently lost them. He has gone back to ask why and nobody know. Some theories are that it sounds very much like the Turkish word for stupid so maybe on day he made a bad play and somebody said that and it stuck. Another theory his that he was trying to day the name of a goalie at the time called Bele and he mispronounced it and said Pele and it stuck. When he first signed the players called him "Gasolina" but he got tired of that and said I am Pele in the papers and I am Pele with you and it had been Pele ever since. |
