Most crucial things?

what some of the most crucial things to bring on a week long camping trip with 3 boys, 12,8,and 6?.....we are going real camping,, tent, cooking on a fire pit... the whole shabang. how do we keep them from getting bored? any input would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure about where you're camping, but we bring the kids bikes or scooters. They just go and go and go on those things. We also bring along a frisbee, fishing tackle, bug catching stuff, a hatchet(the 7 year old will chop a block of wood all day long), swim suits and water toys.

That was all for entertainment. Some absolute essentials include coolers-one for food and one for water and soda pops. Bring dry snacks like crackers and such. Have plenty of toilet paper. Other supplies that are pretty necessary are aluminum foil, trash bags, ziplock bags, twine or rope for a clothes line, cooking utensils and plasticware, paper plates, dishwashing soap, pan big enough to wash dishes in that can be heated over the fire..............

Just think about it like this. Anything you NEED at home, you will need while camping. You just have to decide what is needed and what you can do without.

We have a plastic storage container that is full of what appears to be assorted junk, but we use every bit of it while camping. It's just stuff that we improvise with when out there. We have one skillet, one pot for boiling with a lid, a long fork, a big spoon, a pair of tongs, rope, foil, cheap plastic plates and dollar store silverware.

Just go have fun and improvise when you need to. You'll be surprised at how innovative you can be.

let them cook some meals
take dry kindling with you and fire starters. cardboard egg grates filled with wax

camping is all about the fire

have fun
You will be surprised. Once you get your kids are out there away from playstation and tv. They will find plenty to do, but here are a few ideas.
* 20 questions- you know the basic game- thinking of person place or thing.
*card games- a deck of cards takes up very little space and there are a ton of games to play
*concentration-pick a topic(animals, foods, characters) each person has to add a new animal and remember all of the other animals said before.
*watch for shooting stars-most happen after midnight
Something that will help you out and they will love!
*contest for who can collect the most and biggest pinecones or wood for the fire?The prize doesn't have to be grand maybe the first smore that night.
Pinecones make great coals for cooking.
This one is great for remote or mountain camping!
*collect rocks and let them make a large initial somewhere so when you return next year they can see if it's still there.(We have a large G at one of our favorite spots that we put there in 1998)
*fishing- well duh-every kid loves fishing
* driftwood boats
*skipping rocks (or boys love throwing rocks at a target in the water.
Anyway Have a great time!
Our niece is 5 and we just got back from camping with her. She did not get bored. She spent a lot of time at the river, she had her bike, played croquet, roasted marshmellows, she walked the dogs, we did a lot of walking and looking for things. Feathers, rocks (which grandma brought paint and painted faces on the rocks.) She colored Saturday morning. Oh also took her on a hike, that was fun!!! Take a couple balls, shovel, buckets, some kind of toys. I went to the dollar store and spend $14 on toys and water toys.
IF the key is keeping them occupied then there's so much to do.
Firstly, make stuff. In the outdoors it's amazing what you can make with some ingenuity. Check out Ray Mears' websites to some detailed info.
A real winner is teaching how to make fire. Every kid has an inner pyro, and whilst I strongly condemn Arson, showing them the basics of survival does wonders.
I have two small cousins, one of which is a city girl and the other is a country boy. Every time the family goes camping, the man's there showing his cousin how to make a shelter or just get a quick snack without poisoning herself.

When all that's run out, it's a heap of physical exercise. Long walks, sometimes runs, and a large amount of sight-seeing should inspire something in them. It sure did me.
Might sound boring at first but afterwards they'll feel great. Safety-wise it's essential that all group members stay in twos at least and one of each pair should have a whistle of some kind. It's easy to get lost, harder to get found.
have plenty of games like hide and go seek, flashlight tag, go canoeing, mountain biking, have a nature hike, have fireworks one night, take board games and playing cards.

dont forget good snacks like smores.
make sure to pack toilet paper, first aid kit, hand sanitizer, plenty of blankets.....
