Whats the best wood to chop for firewood?

I started goin camping and it seems silly to buy firewood. What kind of wood should I chop? A live tree? A dead tree? Help, I'm clueless!!!

Pine, maple and willow smell the best when burning, birch is easiest to chop, oak burns the hottest and longest.
Never cut live branches or trees, best to take a walk thru the woods and find dead or down trees and limbs that are dry and chop to size, it's a great workout...I would use a chain saw though.
Happy camping!
Dead as live tree would still be too damp.
A dead tree. Ash and cherry are two good ones.
A dead tree that's not cedar.
Get a dead tree, but not a rotten one. Make sure the wood is good and dry. Then, to get the fire going pretty good, use wood from a cherry or ash tree. Once it starts to get big, change over to oak, really old maple, or hickory for the warmest and longest fire.
Not knowing where you live makes a direct answer difficult.

Pecan, hickory, walnut, cedar, and oak are all good choices. Try to find dead, standing timber. It won't have any sap and will be dryer than wood lying on the forest floor.
Seems numerous forest fires are occuring this time of year.
Make sure you have a good-safe fire pit. Always attended.
