Any tips for beginning climbers? |
I'd be interested mostly in outdoor climbing, but will climb indoors during the winter. Make sure you take a class on belaying and practice the knots. Learn about the proper way to set anchors for your top rope. Always think about redundancies. If (when) something breaks, there should always be a backup. It's really scary being at the top setting your anchors knowing that if something goes wrong, no body is to blame except you. Read lots. Find an experienced partner and start leading/seconding asap, but top-roping is still fun, even for experienced climbers. Use your legs! Consider climbing ice in the winter. Read lots. Use your legs more than your arms. At first it will be hard, but it is much more efficient. look up for a rock gym in your area and they have training classes and from there you can try it out in the real deal If you are new to the sport you should definitely seek out some guidance from professionals or at least some very experienced climbers. There is no way to learn to climb safely by reading books and watching videos. Spending some time at a climbing gym is a good start, but there is still a big difference when you go outside and are on your own to build anchors etc... |
