How do I train for the Auburn, CA century ride?

I live in San Francisco and this will by far be the most challenging climb I've ever attempted. I have two months to train for this 106 mile ride with 11,000 feet of climbing. I'm a relative newbie and am slow on the hills!

Short answer is to get out there and start riding. There are plenty of training plans available that can give you more specific workouts, so I'll let you decide which one best fits your schedule and time constraints.

But what I can tell you is that all involve riding nearly everyday (if possible) and gradually ramping up your mileage as you get closer to the event. From my memory of the century training plan that was published in Bicycling magazine, I think the longest ride in their 2 month training schedule was about 60 miles and that occured about 2 weeks prior to the event.

The 11,000 feet of climbing is going to be a bit of a challenge unless you have some good base fitness. Accordingly, your training rides should have plenty of hill climbing. Also, I hope that you have a relatively lightweight road bike (don't try this event on a mountain bike, you'll be sorry!) with a triple chainring. If you don't, that's probably the first thing you'll want to get.

Besides the training plan and proper bike, I'd highly recommeend getting proper clothing (jersey, bike shorts, gloves, helmet, etc.) and finding proper food and energy drinks. While I'm sure the century will have food/drink stops about every 20 miles, you'll also want to make sure that you have your own supply that you've already tested out during training rides. Nothing is more devastating than getting an upset stomach because your stomach doesn't like the energy drink the centure organizers are providing (if they do at all).

In summary, you have two main objectives in the next 2 months to ensure that you survive this century:
1) Condition yourself to survive the century -- get fit, get your body used to riding for hours on your bike
2) Get the right equipment and gear, and make sure that you've tested out all your equipment (and food/drink choices) prior to the event.
