How do I know if I can ride that far? |
I planned a cycling/camping trip for Aug 4 that's 75kms. I rode about 30kms yesterday, and my butt is sore, but other than that I feel good. Do you think I can actually ride 75km, or should I book a site somewhere closer? Is there time to train before the ride? You have time to train. Once you're no longer sore (I'd wait until tomorrow) ride a little bit further. Do 35 that day, then 40, etc. Work your way up to it, and you shouldn't have any problem doing 75. A lot will depend on terrain, of course. 75 flat is a lot different than 75 hilly. yes train hard before you take on that much riding .but you can do it Set off. If you dont get there then you will know. If this is your FIRST ride than I would make the first one a little closer- better safe than sorry! U know u can do 30 so why not make it 50 kms and then the following time push yourself even further and do the 75. Thats definetely what I would do Go for it. Just ride as much as possible before the 4th. Pick up some padded cycling pants to use on the ride, not while training. Also, during the ride stand up on the peddles from time to time to let your but get some circulation going. It might make you a little sore, but it's a reasonable goal. Good luck. Go to a bike shop and ask for recommendations on a good pair of bike shorts and maybe a saddle. Typically, you don't want a very soft saddle on long rides because it starts to chafe on your inner thighs and crotch giving you saddle sore. There are saddles that give support and still are comfortable. Unfortunately, saddle choice is a personal matter so what may work for me or 98% of other riders might not work for you. Don't forget to get a nice pair of shorts. They make a world of difference too in your comfort level. the only thing (paradoxically) that makes your butt less sore after riding is riding. my butt always hurts after the first ride in the spring, and sometimes the second or third, but after that, no more butt pain. it's the same as using any part of your body in a new way for the first time. |
