What size bike should I get for my 6 year old girl? |
She's 53 lbs and 46 & 1/2 " tall You can get the proper answer about a bike for your daughter by going to a bike store. The people working there will be able to help you a lot. Thank you for asking this, I was wondering the same think yesterday. I want to get my daughter a bike for Christmas. Since 6 year old tend to grow fast, get her a bike that fits her at its smallest adjustment so it can grow with her for a while. However, do not buy a bicycle that she has to grow into. 4. How to test any style of bike for proper fit a. Sitting on the seat with hands on the handlebar, your child must be able to place the balls of both feet on the ground. b. Straddling the center bar, your child should be able to stand with both feet flat on the ground with about a 1-inch clearance between the crotch and the bar. c. When buying a bike with hand brakes for an older child, make sure that the child can comfortably grasp the brakes and apply sufficient pressure to stop the bike. http://www.aap.org/family/bicycle.htm... ummm NO 20 inch!!! I ride a $1000 KHE equilibrium flatland BMX bike and it is 20 inch. 18'' is best. I have an 11 year old boy and 8 year old girl, and I've been a bike geek for many years. For starting get a 12" wheel size, they usually come with training wheels which are simple to take off. They're great for learning because the feet are close to the ground and the gearing is easy - getting started from a stop is one of the hardest skills to learn. After learning on a 12" wheel bike, my boy got a standard 20" bmx bike and it fit ok but the gearing was way too high for a little kid. It just wasn't fun for him, hard to get started, etc. He was actually a better / faster rider on the smaller bike. As he got too big, I found a used 24" wheel 10 speed - an ancient old thing but the gearing goes low enough to be useful for a kid. You could also look around for 20" wheel mountain bikes with multi gears. They're out there but try to avoid the shock absorbers, they just add weight for no real benefit. My 8yr old girl is still on her 12incher and doing great. I'll keep her on that till she outgrows it. Good luck, and always make em wear helmet and gloves. Scott |
