Beginner Road Bike tips? |
I recently bought a Trek 1000 road bike, and was wanting to know some pointers to getting started... I guess things that are useful to know about road riding... Let me introduce a cycling nutter how has a whole site devoted to bicycling. From beginner to advanced there is something for everyone. He is not trying to sell anything just promote and inform. He works on the formula more happy cyclists = even more cyclists. http://sheldonbrown.com/beginners/index.... If you haven't done so, make the bike fit your body as perfectly as possible. Go to www.wrenchscience.com and go through their Road Bike Fit calclator, then set up your bike accordingly. Only change things a tiny bit at a time, and only one at a time. For example, if your back hurts, try moving your seat back a millimeter or two. If your knees hurt in front, raise your seat a couple millimeters, if they hurt in back, lower it. If your hands hurt, raise your stem a bit or rotate your handlebars up a degree or two. Little things that will help you dial in your perfect fit go a long way. Other than that, pump your tires up over 100 PSI and enjoy the ride. Go out as much as you can, and understand that your butt will hurt for a week or two if you haven't rode for a long time. Set a goal for the season, like a charity ride or your first century (100 miles) before September. It will help keep you focused and willing to explore new places to ride. Don't forget to stretch! I second the referral to Sheldon Brown. A great man. Here's another good source for beginner tips: http://forums.roadbikereview.com/forumdi... And here: http://www.jimlangley.net/crank/crank.ht... |
