Can someone with severe osteo arthritis in one knee, ride a bicycle?
I want to get a bike but one knee is so bad that I've been advised to have knee replacement surgery. Would riding a bike help maintain my muscle tone? I thought it might not be as painful as walking and standing have come to be. I sure don't want that surgery. Thanks!! :)
Consult your physician. While riding a bike is low-impact, there are times when you might be putting quite a bit of force on your knees, such as when going uphill. So ask your physician what are the appropriate exercises to do so as not to exacerbate your condition.
I have OA in my knees and had surgery on my left knee. After talking to my doctor, he suggested that I exercise to keep the leg muscles strong. Strong muscles help take some of the demands off the bony structures of the joints. Cycling is a great way to build leg muscles, especially the quads and the calf muscles. But we're in a dilemma because that acute bending causes "Uncle Arthur" to start screaming.
I found that a recumbent bike is MUCH more comfortable on my knees. If you prefer bike machines in a gym to being out on busy roads, look for a semi-recumbent stationary bike. There's far less joint stress than on an upright. You're seated back, rather than forward, and this makes a more open hip and knee angle. They may also be more comfortable for people with back problems, since the rider isn't hunched forward. It's also harder to cheat on a recumbent-- you can't stand up on the pedals when the going gets tough!
Talk to your doctor to see if a recumbent might be a good choice for you. I love a "bent"!

(This is a short-wheel racing bike-- just as with uprights, you can get different wheel sizes and thicknesses)
I started with a bum arthritic knee 5 years ago and got an e-bike. I use the electric assist less and less each year, mainly at the start of the season. much better now.
