Butt pain after cycling? |
I started cycling about a month and a half ago. After I have a long ride, the tail bone area hurts when I sit. It doesn't hurt when I'm riding, or after I'm seated, but the act of sitting causes a pretty sharp pain. Is this something I have to live with or are there any suggestions to help? Everybody has butt pain when they first start cycling. But it shouldn't persist as long as yours has. Check your saddle. There are various adjustments you can make which look minor but make major differences in comfort. Saddle height, angle, and front-to-back position can all be adjusted. The first two are pretty obvious, but front-to-rear position can make a big difference because it directly affects where you sit. If you can't adjust your saddle to eliminate the pain, you might just need a different one. Saddle preference is very personal and no one other than you can decide which one is best for you. Take your bike to your friendly local bike shop. They can have someone observe how you are sitting and make recommendations. A few companies sell an attachment that slips over the bike seat and it is really smushy and will comform and comfort your butt... They are under $15 im sure, I don't remember how much it was exactly Edit: Sooooooooorry 17.99 haha http://www.amazon.com/schwinn-adult-doub... A sharp pain when sitting is not a really common complaint but I'm sure it has to do with your seat. I'm thinking possibly the nose of your saddle might be pointed down slightly, this might put a little extra pressure on your tail bone. I would need a little more info to get further in depth. What kind of bike do you have, and what body type are you? At ant rate, stay away from the really cushy type gel seats/covers. It's not about the padding, it's about the fit. The saddle has to fit your body, and every body is a little different. Any cyclist will tell you, saddles are kind of trial and error, you might go through three or four before you find one you like. The good news is it should get better , with proper fit, and some experience. There is some level of discomfort when you first start, even if your fit is perfect. Good luck I've been cycling for about a month now as well, and at first I had the same problem as you. My best advice is DO NOT get the gel seat cover your first answerer is suggesting. Someone on here suggested that I take mine off, and since then my butt is hurting so much less. I don't know what type of seat you have on your bike, but more often I cycle, the less my butt seems to hurt -- I think I'm just getting used to it. On the other hand, my bf was having the same issue, so he bought a larger seat (he's a pretty big guy). But unless you're a large girl, I don't think you'd need one. |
