What is the best thing to do if your riding a bike and a dog starts chasing you? Ride like your life depended on it because it does. Other options: Buy the stuff the mailmen and women use. It is called Halt! and it shoots about a 6 to 10 foot stream that you want to aim at the eyes or nose of the beast. (This is what I used after getting bit by a German Shepherd that I had ridden by at least 50 times before with never an evil encounter). It does not harm the dog, but it stops them in their tracks so they can rub their nose/eyes. Another option is a mix of Ammonia and water in a squirt type bottle. Good luck getting a non-pressurized bottle to go more than a couple of feet. I was chased by a Bull Mastif last week, I hadn't realized it was there because I was admiring the house across the street until I felt it's breath on my ankle on the first bark! Then I egged him on "come on boy, you can do it!" Yes, I autraced it! Too much fun! My average at the time 16.3 :-) pedal faster, or keep dog treats w/you that way if you are being chased, you can toss them to the dog as a distraction and make a clean getaway Ride faster! dogs can run about 20 - 25 mph so you better pedal fast but it is probably the spinning that is setting them off. Your feet / cranks and wheels are all calling his name if he is not mean.. good luck with that. I would always be confident I could kick the dogs A. Know that you are alpha leader If you throw dog treats, you will actually reinforce the bad behavior-the dog will want to chase you because he is getting a reward for doing so! Take a small water pistol with you & squirt the dog in the face. It will not hurt him/her, but will startle the dog. They will not like getting squirted & should leave you alone after a couple of times! You also may want to try & find out who owns the dog (if it happens in the same area a lot) & make them aware of what's going on. Any responsible dog owner would take care of the situation. But then, a responsible dog owner probably would not be letting their dog run loose... Dogs have a natural born instinct to chase anything running or moving fast including autos, people or other animals. Most will chase only so far, then stop. Just ignore the dog and keep pedaling at ur usual speed. 9 times out of 10, the dog will follow a short distance then stop. If u feel the dog is trying to attack, I hope u can pedal faster than the dog can run. Slow down at first, once the dog slows down to meet you, speed up quickly. The same technique works also while on a motorcycle. It's a bit harder to speed up on a bike but it works! |
