In Hockey, is "PIM" penalty minutes looked at as a good stat? |
I ask this because in fantasy sports only the good stats are counted usually, such as HR and RBI in baseball and TDs and Passing yards in football. Why is PIM counted as a stat in fantasy hockey? Since it's penalty minutes, I see that as a negative stat. Thanks Definitely a good stat just the name of the game in hockey....yea, it's a "penalty" but it's a good penalty....you pwn a guy, you get good stats...and it is a usefully move, generally, to keep your team in the game..... -nny followed the white rabbit yes a good stat including PIM's is a way of rewarding the NHL role players that are grinders or fighters. A better way to do that, would be to have stats for open-ice checks or fights, but since those aren't regularly kept stats, using the ramification of it, PIMS, is the easiest way. You're right. That is a negative stat - why would one want to have high PIM's? Well in the NHL being a tough guy on your team means you get PIM's and no points (goals and assists). Opposite of what one may think, PIM's are a stat that, if counted in your fantasy, will be considered a good stat. For example: that Crosby score 100+ points, and 100+ PIM's in his rookie season is very considerable for his fantasy value. Further, a player who's a great scorer (points and assists and plus-minus) may not be as valuable as a good scorer who gets a lot of penalties. Take Darcy Tucker, the Toronto tough guy. He mixes it up a lot, but gets very good points too. So he's a guy you'd want on your team if you're fantasy league counts PIM's. A smaller guy that doesn't mix it up like Martin St-Louis only has 20 PIM's this year (at this time) so it adds to the whole balancing act of your fantasy league. Bottom line, high PIM's are good! Fantasy Hockey - yes Real Hockey - not great, but it means you have an enforcer. You are wrong about only the good stats being counted, however: ERA (lowest wins), Turnovers (lowest wins), Fumbles Lost (-2 points, standard Y! scoring)... see my point? You are right though, it should be negative... just another reason why i hate hockey. |
