Formula one - what are the plastic disks for on the gun used to change the wheels? are they new?? |
what are they for? do all teams have them? The disks are not on the gun. It's to save time during pitting. The platic caps fit over the rims to aid the car's aerodynamics by reducing the drag from the air rolling into the rim space (although this is questionable as the tyres overhang the rim, so presumably the airstream hits the tyre and skips over the rim, hence no one else is running at the moment, although most teams have tried them at some point). Ferrari have two guns for each wheel man, one to take off the nut and disc, and another to put them on. The reason they have two is because the plastiuc disk and nut are already fiited on the second gun, the one that tightens the nut. This means the pit team do not have to mess about trying to take off the disc, replace it, then put the nut on. The whole thing is whipped off by one gun, and then a new one whipped on with the new tyre. its to minimise blow back of red hot brake particles from the air guns, for when the fuel is being put in. I think it's just Ferrari, they are for putting covers on the wheel nuts & may be aerodynamic. Ferrari decided to attach the discs to the wheels to reduce aerodynamic drag while cornering. I'm not sure how effective they are, as none of the teams have followed suit (yet), but I don't imagine that their use would lead to any significant increase in cornering speed and stability. |
