What is the difference between soft an hard tires in car racing? |
What is the difference between soft an hard tires in car racing? f1 car run faster on soft tires but it wear down faster than hard tires so the choice have to be make wisely, based on race strategy. u can't drive in flat tires..... Soft grip the road better, they are much better for racing. Soft provide better traction, but loose their grip quickly in racing conditions. Hard do not grip as well, but can run far more laps. Soft tires are made from a more flexible grade of rubber. They give better grip but at high temperatures they wear too fast. So when it's really hot, drivers run on harder tires and get about the same grip because the hot pavement and higher running temperature helps soften the tire to about the same point. There's a different compound used in each type of tire. Softer tires give better grip so that the car can sustain larger g-loading without losing traction but they don't last as long. The harder tires don't have quite the grip of the other tires but last longer. Racing teams have to find a balance between how much grip they want and how many times they will need to come into the pits for tires. In Formula one racing, the teams have to use at least one compuond in each race to level the playing field. The soft compund has great traction and it grips the road very well, but in racing conditions the soft loeses its grip of the road because its to hot. The harder of the compunds grips better when its hot and has very good traction. The Soft compund also burns more fuel then the harder one does. Most of the Formula One teams opt to go with the harder compunds for the majority of the race. |
