What's the point of the arc on the top of the penalty box in football? This is called the penalty arc. This arc keeps all players 10 yards away from the penalty spot during a penalty kick. During the taking of a penalty kick only the shooter and the goal keeper are allowed inside the penalty box and the penalty arc. Source(s): FIFA rule book during a penalty kick, it keeps the players in the middle who run in after from having a huge advantage over those on the side. basically it keeps everyone at least a few yards away from the shooter. Though the arc may seem pointless,it has a major role to play in penalties. A person who stands directly behind the shooter will have the shortest distance to run to the rebound i.e straight ahead. The arc denies them this unfair advantage and keeps evry1 on an equal footing by adding 10 yards to the distance they hav to cover and making it equal with what the others have to run from the sides. |
