What happens if the football ref touches the ball during play?

is a penalty awarded to the team who last had possesion or are the players just going to have to work around that

The referree is considered a part of the field; just as if a ball hits a post or a crossbar, you simply play on. This was a big issue in the USA vs. Mexico friendly in Phoenix. Watch the video:

Nothing, the game continues, he's part of the game.
the match will be going on without any interruption
Nothing, the game just keeps going o n. Look at the Mexico vs. USA game (in Feb.), or it also happened in the US vs. Brazil game (U-20 World Cup game).
its as if the ref is not on the pitch-its about the only time he isnt in the middle of things
they normally play on or have drop ball
If the referee touches the ball it is as if nothing happens. A referee can be considered part of the field of play. This is why a good referee stays close enough to the play to see the action through, but stays out of the play and passing lanes. If a shot on goal would hit a referee and go in the net it would count as a goal.
