Is linen a good shirt material for hiking? |
Is linen a good shirt material for hiking? Whether or not linen is a good fabric to be hiking in depends on the climate you will be hiking in and if you will be carrying a pack. Linen is a natural fibre, it is absorbent and it breathes very well. It is also slow to dry, and tends to be rough in texture. If you are planning on hiking in a hot humid climate then a linen shirt would only be okay if you weren't planning on carrying a pack. A wet or damp linen shirt will have a tendency to bunch and cause chafing under a pack which would be very uncomfortable. In a variable climate (like in the mountains where it can often be hot one minute, cool the next) consider quick drying synthetics that breathe well and fit snugly. They will help wick away the moisture from you body, and will prevent you from getting cold if the wind picks up and the temperature drops. Wet clothes are useless for keeping you warm. Synthetics also tend to be silky smooth fabrics and this will help prevent chafing under a pack. If you are just going on a day hike with a small pack, don't worry too much about the shirt. Pack a spare dry one just in case and you should be just fine. no you should wear a leather shirt. lol - jk. yea it's a good material for hiking. yes! very light and breathable When you are hiking you would like to wear linen because it will keep you cool. Other than that you would not because it can rip easily. Find out what kind of environment it is in because if it is not that throne like you can wear it. linen should work well for hiking in hot, dry areas. it should be a light weave so you don't overheat, but of course the problem with that is lighter weaves offer very little sun protection. without knowing where you will be hiking, i can't give you any suggestions as to what kind of shirt would work best. |
