Places to snowboard? |
If you had the chance to go snowboarding anywhere, where would you go? I would travel to the place I regularly visit: Lake Tahoe! My snowboarding abillity is definitely dismal (at the beginner level), but if I went snowboarding, I'd choose the Lake Tahoe region. There are plenty of resorts in the winter to offer a variety of courses and difficulties. The terrain parks are not too difficult, either. Hi, if you live in Canada definatly Ferni. It is my favorite mountain by far. But also Big White near Kelowna is unreal. Kicking Horse is good if you want moguels, and if you want to snowbaord in a t-shirt try Mt. Washington on Vancouver Island. whistler in canada, lake tahoe in nevada(overlooking a lake and wearing shorts), and ofcourse the indoor snow sports mountain built in japan. Cortina D'Ampezzo, northeast Italy. I'd go back in a heartbeat. Of course, now the Euro is killing the dollar so getting there ain't cheap. But for $180 for 6 days (most of Colorado is $80/day and I love Colorado), with access to the 2nd or 3rd largest terrain in the world, easy access via buses (mostly between 5 min - 30 min from Central Cortina, the village area which has tons of things to do at night!), did I mention free bus? I went late Jan/early Feb and conditions were very good. Any skier/boarder would've been more than happy and the best part is, no lines and the mountain all to yourself, yes there are people there but it's that vast that you'll be able to find a mountain all to yourself. 2nd, when not 1st, is Aspen. I know, I know, glitzy, expensive, I've heard it all. At first I was reluctant 4 yrs ago, but the last 3 yrs, Aspen has been nothing but wide open runs on the best powder imaginable. Do your research, very affordable Inn's are available and you can find a great $6 burrito (yes, 2007) at a restaurant, and that's a big burrito, not Taco something or another. I know Canada has some great mountains on the west coast, Whistler being the best, so I've heard (only been to Mont Tremblant near Montreal), read the other postings and do your research. Except for Mont Tremblant, I've been all over Colorado, Telluride, Powderhorn, Aspen, Copper Mt., Breckenridge, Vail and in Europe I've been to Cortina & Courmayeur in Italy, Innsbruck, Austria, Cervino/Zurmatt - border of Italy/Switzerland, Chamonix and Mont Blanc in France (no, not the pen, it's a glacier in Southeast France). So I've been lucky with my board and depending on these 2 places, the only one that'll hold #1 will be the one of the two I went to last - and that's between Aspen and Cortina! Sorry it's long, but if you're an avid boarder and don't leave near mountains (I'm born and raised in Miami, go figure!), see as much as you can! Don't hold yourself to one mountain or region. I would go to Chile. I haven't been there yet, but the good thing about going to Chile is it is opposite the season here in Oregon so I could extend my season by going there. I have been snowboarding in France, Italy, and Switzerland and although they are absolutely gorgeous, they are not terribly snowboard friendly. Some of the lifts are hard to use with a snowboard. But I still had a blast. |
