IN GOLF... what does "under par" or "over par" mean?
also, Do u always have to have 2 putts on every par..??
For example, on par 4, ur suppose to have 2 strokes and 2 putts.
Similarly, on par 5, ur suppose to hav 3 strokes and 2 putts ???
Par is the strokes you are supposed to get on a hole. Under par is how many strokes under that number for the day, hole, or tournament. Over par is the same but how many over. You are not SUPPOSED to get 2 putts. It would help your score if you kept it at 1 or 2 putts, butt you don't have to get2.
It doesn't matter how many putts you have, it just matters that you get the ball in the cup in 4 strokes to be even if it's a Par 4, or in 5 strokes on a Par 5.
Par is the established number it should take you to get it in the cup. It's average.
Being "under par": Lets say you've played holes 1 through 3. The first 2 were Par 4s and the 3rd was Par 5. That's a total of 13. If your score is less than 13, you are under par, if it is more than 13, you are over par. Get it?? If you got a par on the first hole (it took you 4 strokes to get it in) and then par on the 2nd hole (4 strokes) - and then got a birdie on the Par 5 Hole 3 (4 strokes) you are 1 under. If you got a 6 on that Par 5, you would be one over par.
For a Par 5:
3 strokes - an eagle
4 strokes - a birdie
5 strokes - Par
6 strokes - Bogey (1 over)
7 strokes - Double bogey (2 over for the hole)
Par is the amount of strokes that the hole is based on, so on a par four you COULD have 2 putts or you could have 3 or 1 as long as your total amount of strokes is four it's a par, if you take less than four strokes on a par four, its under par, if you take more its over par
par is established on every hole. If its a par 4 and you score a 3 you are 1 under par....Similarly if you score a 5 on this hole...you are 1 over. The object is to use as few strokes to hole out as possible. Thus if you chip in from off the green....you would obviously have no putts.
par is a set standard of how many total shots it should take to make it from tee to hole. For example a par 3 170 yard hole would be an average or "par" of 3 shots, shots include driver or irons or putting, so if you are over par that means it took you more shots than the set par and likewise for under
The putting thing no but that is your best way to par it...
Par is the "average"... So if the par of a hole is 4 and you get a 6 you are 2 over par.... par 4 and you get 3 you are 1 under par
