What's a good scoring strategy? |
Feel free to share what works for you. I'm a 16 hcp, usually shoot high 80's low 90's from tips. Ocaasionly venture outside that range high and low. I enjoy playing from the tips because you get the best look at the course and have to make shots in all areas of your game. I get off the tee fairly well, can't hit a green for the life of me and have a decent short game. What would be the best strategy for a low score? Any tips on how to practice hitting more GIRs would be greatly appreciated. I'm a big fan of the 3/4 golf swing. Many times when people like you and me swing full our club at the top of the swing dips past parallel. I sounds to me that you don't have a problem with distance as you hit from the tips. Next time you go golfing either on the course or at the driving range...practice and swing only 3/4. Actually....just go to the range and work your way up from a LW-Driver....and hit all your shots....with 3/4 swing. I guarantee that your accuracy will improve. Here's the kicker...after awhile...you'll find that when you swing 100% your clubhead won't be dipping past parallel anymore. When your clubhead dips past parallel it spells trouble. Good luck with your game, I hope this helps! If shoot in 80s or 90s mostly, try not playing from the tips. Yeah it's fun, especially if you can bomb, but if you're looking to improve your game I would suggest playing from one tee box up. If you are not hitting GIRs, you should work on hitting GIRs. When you are shooting in low 80s or high 70s, then move back to the tips. By moving up, you should give yourself more wedges through 7-irons into the green. These are more manageable clubs, so work on improving this part of your game 1st. Most people overemphasize the drive as far as their scoring woes, when most likely shots are being lost on and around the green. Focus on and practice this part of your game to lower your score, then when you have done this, move back to the tips where you will work on hitting more long irons and even woods into the greens. There is nothing wrong with hitting from the white tees instead of the blues or blacks. Yes, it challenges you as far as shot making ability, but when your shooting in the 90s, do you really need to worry about how to be creative in attacking a course. More importantly than playing from the tips, I would pick a certain yardage to play. Some courses have the tips at 6800+ yds, where some are barely at 6000+. Don't worry about which tee to play, worry about which yardage to play. Pick something between 5900 and 6300-6400 and play this distance for a while. Once you see improvements, then start challenging yourself with the longer distance. This is the exact same situation I am in now. I used to always play, grip it and rip it golf. No matter what club I had, I would swing as hard as I could, so I thought there was no problem playing from the tips. I have toned my swing down (which amazingly gives me greater control without losing a lot of power) and have worried a lot more about course management to improve my game. (ie. hit an iron on a 350yd par 4 to give me a PW or 9iron into the green, instead of driver where I'm either in the woods, or have an awkward 60-70yd half swing shot.) The next time you go out to play, keep track of all your shots. Fairways hit, greens in regulation, number of putts, sand saves, number of chips/pitches, etc... If you keep track of those type of stats for a few rounds, you ought to be able to see what areas of your game need improvement. If you practice in the areas that need improvement, you should see your scores start to go down. Fairways and greens. Keep them below two putts and you get on PGA tour. You will never play par. Why?? No, practice -- play on Saturday morning then complain. Your not doin this for fun--enjoyment---relaxation. All ya have to do is play up to the hole and put it in. Putting you on the green in one and then 3 shots to sink the ball -- not good. Why does your short game suck??? Par 3 is usually not a long Tee shot unless you go over the green. Strategy for playing---play up to the hole and drop the ball in the cup. Play golf 3 days a week and go to the range. Just remember, the first hole doesn't count Whiffs don't count Putts within 3 feet go in You get at least 1 mulligan per hole Duffs, shanks, yanks, slices, dunks, penalty strokes, OB, fat strikes, blades, hooks, and any other bad shots don't count. |
