"AMATER!?" *What* in the world has DUMBED-DOWN nearly ALL of our sportscasters? |
Not many years ago, **everyone** knew that "amateur" is pronouced, "AMA-chur." **Not** "AMA-ter." What tipping point caused our sportcasters to become so dumbed-down?!? The computer age!!! Seriously! Most people coming out of school these days can hardly spell, due to spell check, grammar check, etc. Couple that with "text-speak", in which words are sliced and diced into a few letters and symbols that anyone with a proper English education can't decipher, and you have a whole generation that does not understand the English language well enough to speak it properly. Either that, or the sportscasters you are referring to are the jocks who never actually had to know the language, they went to school on sports scholarships... Actually, according to the dictionary, amateur can be pronounced either way. It comes from the latin word amator. So hate to disappoint you, but there was nothing wrong about the pronunciation, it was probably a regionalism from where said sportscaster is from. Apparently, not "everyone" knows what you think you do. American Heritage Dictionary |
