Can anybody tell me who won the last open at Carnoustie in Scotland? |
Can anybody tell me who won the last open at Carnoustie in Scotland? Carnoustie had its last British Open in 1999. It was won by Paul Lawrie. It was a very memorable match because Frenchman Jean Van de Velde was several shots ahead as he stood on the 18th tee and everyone thought he couldn't loose. Van de Velde hit his ball into the Barry Burn, a deep wide gully that runs in front of the 18th green. His caddy and the rest of the World thought he would pick the ball out of the burn and take a one shot penalty, thereby having a guaranteed shot at the green and an undoubted win. Van de velde wouldn't take the penalty drop, despite several protests and plea's from his caddy. He couldn't get his ball out, finished with a 7 on the 18th and threw the title away. The decision he made was so bad and so obviously wrong at the time that TV commentators and spectators were shouting at TV screen's telling him to take the penalty drop. It was so memorable that the course management placed a concrete marker placed beside the burn with his name on it for all to see! Paul Lawrie won in 1999, following Jean Van de Velde's Sunday meltdown (triple bogey) on the 18th hole. I believe that Paul Lawrie won it in 1999 but thats if i remember correctly!
