How come my clothes smell like ammonia after I skate? |
I always wondered this and am surprised I didn't ask this sooner. Back in h.s. when my mother dearest washed my clothes she brought it to my attention and sure as **** my long underwear and t shirt smelled like ammonia! How does my body sweat ammonia out? I know i'm not crazy. I didn't booze in h.s. so it's not from beer either. Who noticed this? Ammonia is one of the components of urea. People think you get rid of most of your body's urea when you urinate. But most people excrete around 70% of their urea through sweating. The more physical activity you have, the more urea comes out of your pores. Since you normally feel like you've taken a shower in sweat after a hockey game/practice, your equipment will stink of sweat. Urea breaks down when exposed to too much oxygen which creates ammonia and gives off the odor. Sweat is acidic. Outside of the more intense odors that come naturally with the puberty phase, one reason you might have felt the scent to be stronger might be due to relative dehydration. The more hydrated you are, the more dilluted your sweat and urine become. Conversely, the lower your level of hydration, the more acidic and pungent the aroma of your sweat. I'm a horrible sweater and realized early on in my playing days that I needed to drink tons of liquids to avoid cramping. As a result, my sweat was so dilluted that my gear rarely smelled at all unless I left my bag unopened for a long stretch of time. |
