So far in the new NHL CBA, we have seen two RFA's sign offer sheets, will this become a regular thing? |
I guess what surprises me is that the NHL GM's have actually put this tool into play, knowing that they're putting their own young players at risk. After Darcy Regier matched Edmonton's 7 year, 50 million dollar offer to Thomas Vanek, he said he was going to give offer sheets to all future Oiler RFA's who he thought would help the Buffalo Sabres. This is clearly a ploy to avenge Kevin Lowe. Bob Clarke was the first GM to ever offer someone an offer sheet. Most people dismissed this as craziness, because Clarke is an oddball anyway. And at the end of the day 1 year 1.9 million isn't the end of the world. But, the 7 year 50 million dollar offer brought a whole new can of worms to the table. Lowe had gone out and offered a long term contract to an established player in the NHL. He had set himself up for disaster. In future, he would have to overpay to keep his RFA's because teams would now to be tempted to take a shot at one of the pioneers of the offer sheet. We have already seen what they can do with this tool in the NFL. This will eventually be done in the NHL as well. Include offers in the offer sheets so that the players CAN'T be signed by their team. I remember the one team put a clause in the offer sheet that if the X player played more then 2 games in the city they were currently in it would be a huge bonus. OK so even if you play that team in the playoffs in the NFL you don't risk going to that city more then twice. YET if the team that he was with signed him they would be FORCED to give him that bonus. So yeah be warned that we will probably see things like this within a few years or so in the NHL. Rather then give crazy offer amounts we will see "riders" attached to the offer sheets, unless the NHL blocked that out from the start(like the NFL is now probably thinking about doing) This tool will be explored further. This will become the tool that dismantles small market contenders. A GM can hand cuff another team by offering exorbitant amounts of money and long terms to one of their RFAs and thus prying the player away due to cap restraints or restricting the cap space for signing future FA's. Buffalo should have let him go for the draft picks. Edmonton doesn't have that kind of money. It's crazy. AS STATED THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS ROAD!!!!!! TEAMS WITHIN THE SAME CONFERANCE CAN REALLY MANIPULATE THERE RIVALS CAP SITUATION I FOR ONE CAN'T BELIEVE THE CASH BUFFALO JUST HAD TO FORK OUT,(THEY SHOULD HAVE TAKEN THE PICKS) THIS WAS DEFFINATELY A SAVING FACE MOVE BY BUFFALO MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LET YOUR 2 STAR , ASSISTANT CAPTAINS WALK AWAY, HAVE TO WATCH ZUBRUS WALK AND THEN GET KICKED IN THE CROTCH AND HAVE TO PAY TOP DOLLAR FOR VANEK HE'S GOOD ,BUT WOW!!!!!!!!!!!! IF THEY HAD ONLY TAKEN CARE OF BUISNESS A FEW MONTHS AGO (NOT LOW BALLED THEIR STAR PLAYERS) THEY MAY HAVE HAD 2- 3 OF THESE GUYS RETURNING AS OPPOSSED TO (1 OF THE 4) FOR JUST A LIL BIT MORE COIN LIVE AND LEARN BUFFALO LOOK AT IT THIS WAY YA STILL GOT YER COACH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HEHEHEHE HE'LL BE EARNING EVERY DOLLAR THIS YEAR ONE QUESTION THOUGH??????? WHAT HURTS MORE 1) HULLS, NO GOAL IN THE PLAYOFFS? OR 2) WATCHING YOUR MANAGEMENT LET YOUR TEAM WALK AWAY??? THIS IS A DISGRACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE WAY THIS OFF SEASON IS GOING OUR 1ST PLACE REGULAR SEASON SABRES MAY NOT EVEN MAKE THE PLAYOFFS NEXT YEAR |
