Who's the best 2 year old thoroughbred right now!?
Interested in previewing Kentucky Derby in May!
As everyone else has said a top 2yo at this point in the year rarely makes a top 3yo come Derby time. That said, there is a very interesting horse who recently won the Bashford Manor Stakes at Churchill Downs named Circular Quay. He's a colt by Kentucky Derby winner Thunder Gulch out of a Belong to Me mare named Circle of Life (herself a G-1 winning 2yo). The Bashford Manor has produced some runners who went on to do big things, most recently Limehouse.
There may not be much in the way of indicators for the classics next year yet. Many of the horses that go on to make good three year olds do not make their debuts until later in the year of their juvenile season.
I don't know about the best two year old in America right now, but over here in GB I'd say it is the Dixie Union filly SANDER CAMILLO, trained by Jeremy Noseda. She won the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Cherry Hinton at Newmarket just two days ago. Frankie Dettori says she is the best two year old filly he has ever ridden, and there's a guy who's sat on some good horses.
Its way to early to predict horses for the derby,,,ALOT of the two yr old are just now beginning to develop and either training or lightly raced....Until closer to breeders cup day...Theres still wayyyyyy to many unanswered questions need to be answered out there
Most 2 yr olds have not even raced yet and a good 2 yr old does not always make for a good 3 yr old. Most of them are pushed too hard too soon. I would wait until at least the Breeder's Cup in October to find the best 2 year old. Then I would pick a horse that ran but did not win. Why? The past winners of the Breeder's Cup Juvie dont seem to make it to the 1st Saturday in May. Pay attention to the derby "prep" races and go from there. Good Luck!!!
School of life.
It won't be until sometime in August before any of them start to get some recognition.
