How many horses are hurt each year in the grand national?
I'm looking for statistics
this varies every year. last year there were 3 injured and 1 put to sleep (i think).
The amount of horses hurt is minimal it is now very rare a horse is put down as the fences have been modernised i:e. made easier.
Each year there are 40 runners and whilst quite a few horses fall there are usually only one or two fatalities.
As a general rule the faster the ground is on the day of the race the more injuries/fatalities there are. This is because the horses run faster and are therefore more likely to make a mistake at speed or jump to enthusiastically. If the ground is soft or heavy then they do not tend to race as fast but you will get a lot of horses pulling up or falling becasue they are tired. You tend to get far fewer finishers when the ground is heavy.
I don't know about statistics, but I wouldn't believe what the animal rights people say. They'll say anything!
This varies each year. Many years there are no serious injuries, sometimes you get one or two fatalities or serious injuries. It also depends on what you mean as hurt, several horses will go home with minor cuts and bruises. The going can have an impact, with more serious injuries occurring on faster ground. Sometimes horses can be injured in between fences, nothing to do with jumping.
This maybe a question you would like to direct to Aintree Racecourse, via its website.
Well the Grand National race is a very difficult course for the horses so the fatalites are far higher than for most races. I would say that based on the stats you would be able to get via google about 3/4 horses die each year.
I belives that 2 from the latest Grand National have been reported dead so far.
The biggest problem with getting stats on this is the fact that so many deaths go unreported; its hardly a side to racing that is nice to report. Plus, it reveals just how uncivilised the "sport" is!
On a whole, around 180 horses die a year as a result of horse racing. And we are supposed to be a country full of animal lovers! Ha ha!
