Why do race horses have such weird names?

Is there a reason other pets are named spot and horses have these long strange name? Just wondering if there is something behind it.

The Jockey Club requires all American racehorses to be registered with a 'unique' name, meaning no other horse can have been registered using the name within a certain length of time, and 'famous horse's names' are off-limits forever. The name has to be under a certain number of letters with several other restrictions and several names must be submitted for each horse with the jockey club making the choice. So, 'common' names have already been taken, and may not be used again meaning owners need to get creative! Keep in mind that racehorses are not called by their registered names around the barn-- their trainers and grooms will use a 'barn name' for that. For example, Man O' War's 'barn name' was "Red."

Also, many people want the horse to have a meaningful name-- something powerful and appropriate for what they hope will be a winner. The names of the sire and dam of the horse and other famous horses in the pedigree are also taken into consideration and may be influential in the horse's name.

For example, offspring of Storm Cat often include 'Cat' in the name. Horses with Seattle Slew in their ancestry will often have a 'slew' in their names.

Here's a link to the rules for naming thoroughbreds registered with the Jockey Club. As you can see, it can be complicated to find a suitable name that has not already been taken; hence the plethora of 'unique' names you see:

Usually there named after a quirky quote, name, phrase, event or something the wife thinks is cute or funny.
Why do humans have such weird names like Jim and Bob, isn't there anything else they can be called? Why do so many of them have the same name?
english class
They usually try to name a horse after there parents(part name)Eg: if a horse is by Biscay, they will call it Son Of Biscay.
as long as you don't piss somone off you can name your horse anything you want, there was a horse named" liquorinexcess" trained by bob baffert a few years ago,
well i always heard that the reason the names are like that is so in the racing career if a horse got really famous w/ that name, most likely another horse would not be named that weird name.

like, if a horse was name for instance Imawildandcrazyguy (lol) most likely there would not be another race horse named taht because first, it's in the jockey club registration and second, your not allowed to do so

but then if say a horse named Nobiz Like Shobiz was pretty famous like actually really famous and stuff people would remember that name because it was so different because i know i'll remember who that horse is when ever someone says his name

just like, Rags To Riches, Curlin, Sharp Humor, Smarty Jones, Man O' War, and stuff like that.

hope i helped you out! it's my last day of school today (june 8) it's like 6:14am just got done getting ready. lol but i'll finally be out of 7th grade! woohoo
