For horsebackriding, western or english? |
what is the difference? i just started and i have to pick? I started out and still love english, but find western much more comfortable. I personally recommend english to start out, especially if you want to show, because it teaches you very proper form and balance. The English saddle is small and lightweight, usually with something called a knee roll in the front to keep you in place. The stirrups are irons held on by skinny leathers, and there is no horn. The bridle has a noseband and you always use two hands. The gaits are typically faster than western, and it is common to "post the trot", where you stand up and down on diagonals during the trot. The gaits of a non-gaited horse a walk-trot-canter-gallop. Western is much more relaxed and slow...usually. The saddle has a horn with a raised pommel (in front of your hips) and a much higher cantle (back). The stirrups are held by very wide leather that is part of the saddle, and the saddle has a skirt. It is much easier to stay in a western saddle than english. The western bridles vary greatly, but most have no noseband, and are used with only one hand, called neck-reining. It depends on what bit you use. The slower gaits are usually walk-jog-(sometimes)trot-lope-... There are vast differences in the styles, but more than I can write here. I would try both styles of riding and decide which you like better, but I really stress starting out with an english background. It isn't as practical in the long run (trail riding and pleasure use), but really gives you a very strong foundation that makes for a better rider. Good luck, and please feel free to email on my page if you have any other questions! HORSEBACK RIDING IS NOT ENGLISH OR WESTERN,HORSE RIDING IS VERY OLD THING FROM EGYPTIAN ,AND GREEKS Kind of depends on two things. Preferred style and gender. Western is on the line of riding style and gear you've seen on western movies. English is more formal, different type saddle and as for girls, they often learn to ride sidesaddle. I personally learned from early childhood to ride western style with western gear Western, its a lot more fun. English uses a lighter weight saddle. English riding is all about form and presentation. Western riding is about working with the horse. Western riding comes from the cowboys who could not complete their job on the ranch without a good horse. Its about building a working relationship with the horse. there's a "horn" on the western saddle and you only hold the reins with one hand. there's no horn on the english saddle and you hold the reins with two hands, one in each. that's pretty much the difference. i would say start out on western, and gradually get into english, too. my own horse experiance |
