Can I trace a gun by serial number? If so how would I go about it?

I got a gun for a gift and I want to see who it is registered to. I would appreciate any help anyone could give me...

You would have a hard time getting that information, ATF has that information, but it is not readily available.
If you know where the gun was purchased, they can tell you. A lot of gun dealers offer a registration service, usually with a fee, where you can take the gun in and register it in your name. You might want to contact a few in your area.

You may be able to contact the manufacturer to find out who they sold it to, then contact them, then just follow the trail til you get to the retail purchaser. This could take you some time and effort. BTW, law enforcement uses this method. AFT does not keep records of gun transactions, that's the responsibility of the gun dealer. They would have to go through the same process to get the info.

Hope this helps

Sounds like someone gave you a gun, and your afraid it was stolen. The only way you can find out for sure is to contact your local law enforcement.

If this is a pistol, legally you need to register it anyways. Just go to your local sheriff's office with the gun name, model, and serial number, and apply for a permit to buy. If they find out it was stolen, just tell them who gave it to you. You don't want to be caught with a stolen gun, or one that was used in a crime.
Check with your jurisdictional police dept, city, township or county. They will tell you if you need to register it. In Michigan, where I'm at it is required. They have the means to run a check on the firearm. You do not and there is no way legally for you to do so.
