When talking about bullets, what is a cowboy load?

When talking about bullets, what is a cowboy load?

At one time, it meant a full-strength load as opposed to lower-loaded target and "gentlemen's loads". These days, however, it tends to be just the opposite. It's lesser loaded blackpowder ammo meant for nothing but target shooting. Its strict definition is "SASS legal", though.

Some cowboy loaded ammo is so weak it's little more than air rifle quality.

Those that even bother to try to argue the point anymore will usually try to justify their sub-loading by the old "but old ammo wasn't as powerful as modern stuff is so we have to sub-load to be realistic." It's bull in most cases. Those that sub-load do it for one reason and one reason alone....and that is to allow them to shoot faster with less muzzleclimb.

Addendum....

Here's the SASS rulebook section on ammo.

鈥?Revolver ammunition must have a muzzle velocity less than 1,000 fps. Rifle ammunition
must have a muzzle velocity less than 1,400 fps. Shooters may be held responsible for
damage caused to a target or injury to personnel due to 鈥渂ounce back鈥?because of
inappropriate ammunition. This major safety violation is grounds for 鈥渋nstant
disqualification鈥?and ejection from the match.

Revolver and rifle ammunition may not be jacketed, semi-jacketed, plated, gas checked, or
copper washed. It must be all lead. Molydisulfide coated bullets or equivalent are acceptable.

Revolver and rifle ammunition must be of 鈥渟ingle projectile鈥?design. 鈥淢ultiple projectile鈥?br /> Ammunition with bullets recessed below the case mouth is disallowed.

Pump and lever action shotguns are allowed to load no more than two rounds at a time in the

That didn't copy worth a damn but you get the idea.

That's the file if you want to go look at it in its entirety.
It's ammo loaded to specs of the time when cowboys used them. It's usually cowboy calibers like .45 Long Colt and it's loaded with lower pressure blackpowder instead of high pressure, modern smokeless powder.
Cowboy loads are midrange loads that come in calibers designated for use by people who either shoot cowboy matches or just enthusiasts.
The slugs used are usually lead round nose (LRN) or lead semi-wadcutter (LSWC). Velocities for .38/.357, .44, and .45 (as well as other loads) is usually around 800fps out of a common cowboy single-action revolver. They are more controllable this way and wear and tear is minimalized. Ir does not take much to kill paper.
