Question about using full choke & 00 buckshot?
Hi. I bought 00 buckshot & I have full choke on my 12 gauge shotgun. is it safe to use this ammo with full choke?
thanks for your help
Firing 00 buckshot through a full choke is safe, but not recommended if you want some accuracy. Cylinder bore or improved cylinder is best.
The nature of a choke is it's ability to squash down a certain load of shot into a denser pattern to make the shot hit closer together. The smaller the shot, the better.
00 Buck are large shot, and when run through a choke they are deformed, thus degrading distance and accuracy.
Fire a couple into some soft media. and dig out the shot. My 870 with a 20" cylinder bored barrel will put all nine 000 shot on a paper plate at 50 feet.
it is safe, but I'd check local state law to make sure it's legal. Manufactures hire engineers to ensure their product is capable of performing to certain standards, and with a full choke, your shotgun is perfectly safe (mechanically that is) meaning the gun itself can handle the recoil, whether or not the operator is capable.
It'll rattle and spit but I guess you can as long as the barrel is short. 00 is a relatively short range shot anyway, no need for a choke. I only fire it out of my 28 inch barrel.
Yes it is safe, and with the full choke it allows your shot pattern to remain tight for further distances. Chokes are fine with all of your shots and constriction will not damage anything etc. When you use slugs it is reccomended that you use IC so you do not have lead fouling in your choke. I am not sure why these nuts up here respond if they do not know the answer.
Allow me to debunk the above answers
1. Any modern shotgun that is not a damascus barrel will be just fine with buckshot. I also like to use 00 buckshot on a full choke I might add when I go shooting. You just have to make sure it is the right size. Your buckshot needs to be for 12 gauge and match the proper length that is stated on your barrel (2 3/4 inch, 3 inch etc.)
2. It should NOT be rattling or spitting out of your barrel, and the length of your shotgun makes no difference when using loads. (I might add my shotgun has a 30 or 32 inch barrel).

Improved Cylinder is a better choice for the choke.. It allows for greater shot displacement.
Yes, like the above answer says, unless it is a damascus barrel which you probably don't have, I think these barrels were mostly early model Ithicas. It is urban legend that you can't shoot 00 through Full. I don't shoot a lot of 00 in the field, the only load I use it in is my home defense scatter-gun.
