Is M4A1 illegal or legal to regular person? Where can I purchase that rifle? A M4A1 is a class 3 machinegun,You need to get a class 3 lecesne wich requires a detailed background check and it is really expensive.Here in Pennsylvania for the license and the weapon I would probly have to spend 15,000.Its really not worth it.If I were you I would just get a semi auto AR15 you can build on for around 650,or you can just buy one from a gunshop Ive seen them anyware from 850 to 1500 and you can get one that looks just like a M4A1.To get one of these it is not very difficult unless you live in a state like Cali that has goofy gun laws,But most states you can buy them.Good Luck The M-4A1 is the carbine version of the military M-16A1 rifle. The M-4 is common in use in Iraq. The full auto versions are made and can be owned by civilians who have a BATF Class 3 license to buy/posess a legal machine gun. The semi-auto version is also available to the civilian market but in many states are subject to an "Assault Rifle" ban. You need to check with your state regulatory departments for your home state about ownership/possession of one. They fire the 5.56 MM or .223 caliber rifle cartridge Gunsmith/Gunshop Owner/Appraiser/ Collector Seeing as how it is a current military weapon, I doubt you can get one legally. However, if one were for sale in a gunshop, all that would be necessary for you would be to buy the tax stamp (used to be a $200 fee). Only if you buy and sell automatic weapons do you need a Class 3 dealer's license;. You can't buy ANY Class 3 weapon manufactured after the 1986 cut-off date, which limited the ENTIRE stock of weapons to what was on the books at that date. This includes ALL weapons, both domestic AND imports AND full-auto components, as well. As the military M-4A1 configuration FAR post-dates this, you can forget your dream rifle. However, with all the aftermarket plastic parts available, if you have the finances to pay megabucks for the project, you COULD buy a M-16A2, if you can find one left on the market, and convert it to LOOK like a M-4.
