A change of skate - Yes or No? |
Im using Roces figure skates at the moment and am thinking of changing to a pair of Riedell Red Ribbon. Anybody using this type of skate?, it just about meets my price range, any comments would be appreciated. I am on skate UK LEVEL 10 at moment and want to progress further. Cheers. If you know you will be continuing skating, you would be better off buying boots and blades separately. It will be more expensive, but it will be worth your money . . . if you got the Reidell Red Ribbon, you will soon find the need to upgrade when you learn more advanced moves! The attached blade that comes with "beginner" skates are ok up until you start learning jumps and spins. I had beginner Reidells and they served me well . . . but once I got into advanced moves, I felt like my blade was "slipping". The toe picks certainly did not help much for toe jumps - it did not grip the ice too well. Spins were just icky. With better boot and blade (bought separately), OH it made such a difference - even with stroking and turns - everything!! And they lasted me way longer than my beginner Reidells! As everyone has already said, if your current boots are not broken down, stick with it . . . and do save up for higher level skates. If price is an issue, perhaps look into used skates (some pro shops carry them on consignment). Good luck and congrats to getting to Level 10! I wouldn't change to the Red Ribbons. If the Roces bottoms are plastic (PVC), the Riedell Red Ribbon is essentially a replacement for what you already own. The Red Ribbon is the lowest model in the Ribbon series of skates. The Blue Ribbon is a better value skate for the money, but the Medallion series of skates are even better than that. If your current Roces have leather heels and soles (they look like wood, but they're really leather) then the Riedell Red Ribbon skates are several steps down from your current skates. You should try to buy a better skate and blade combination that will be good for the higher-level elements you're about to start learning. If your Roces still fit and aren't broken down, use them until you can save for a better skate like the Roces Figura or Riedell Medallion series. They both have good beginner blades on leather soled skates. Plus, they have better support than the lower-level skates, which will make skating easier and the skates will last longer. Once you start doing jumps and one-foot spins, you can upgrade the blade to something like an MK Professional or JW Coronation Ace. In order to change blades, you have to have leather-soled skates with screw-attached blades. Best of luck with your lessons and skate search! http://www.roces.com/iceskates.asp?cat=1... http://www.riedellskates.com/ice/280.htm... I've never heard of Roces, but they look like good skates! Stick with them if they are not broken down. I've never heard of Roces brand ice skates before so I'm assuming that they are lower level skates. Riedell Red ribbon skates would be better skates, but I think since you are in UK skate level 10 that a little bit higher skate would be a little better. Here is Riedell's recommendation list for skates and blades: http://www.riedellskates.com/fit/rec_ska... http://www.riedellskates.com/fit/rec_bla... that might be helpful. I do like Riedell skates, and even though I've never used the exact red ribbon skate, I have liked all of the other skates that I have owned from them. Figure Skater |
