My rink is closed!?

Until August 19th! What do I do? The closest one is an hour away and I will probably not get a chance to go to that one. I'm afraid I'm going to "unlearn" everything I just learned in group lessons! And then, when I sign up for the next course, I'll bomb it! Help!

August is only a month away . . . don't worry, that's not enough time to "unlearn" skating!!!

Think of this time as a positive break from skating. Now is your chance to work on all the off ice stuff that you've been thinking about doing, but never really got into. Stretching, stamina, strength, dance . . . there's a lot you can do to keep yourself "skating fit" . . . and you'll be just fine when you go back on the ice!

I like to envision skating moves in my head. It's good to review things in your mind as if you were on the ice . . . it may sound silly, but it's good to keep your brain skating fit too! And in your head, you can do these moves perfectly!! :)

Oh, if you have your own skates, now is the time to go polish them - hee hee. Make 'em pretty for when you back! You can always go to figure skating websites, watch skating videos, read skating books - to keep you in the loop!

Hey, and it's summer (at least in this part of the world) - so why not take this opportunity to go do something outdoors or new or different?! Enjoy something you would not normally do because of your skating schedule.

And think, when you go back, you are going to have so much energy and motivation to skate - simply because you missed it!! Sometimes a break is a good thing (wink!).

Enjoy your next few weeks while you can!
I don't think you will forget everything, depending when you started. Try maybe going to that rink, maybe like once a week, or two. I'm sure you'll be able to go. Or, if you go on google, go to the "maps" section and click "find businesses" and type ice skating and then where you live. good luck!
I had a similar problem. I bought a cheap pair of roller blades and continued to practice using them and a flat parking lot surface. Although the friction is different it was a quick fix to keep me up to speed when I went back.

Also, odds are you won't forget what you just learned in classes. It's like learning to ride a bike, the basics and fundamentals are just building blocks to the bigger things. And I am sure everyone else in the class will be in the same boat.
well when your just learning you may lose somethings when you go back out to the ice you may have to re get used to the feel of your skates but other than that you wont unlearn everything if anything spins are hardest to get back jumps not so much they come back easy i was off for 2 weeks cause i hurt my knee and when i got back my spins weren't as good but my jumps and everything else were just as good as they were before maybe just not quite as high
It is a shame to lose such a cool hangout during the hot summer. You have my sympathies!

You will not "unlearn" everything. A few things might change or be odd when you come back, but it'll only take an hour or so to regain those skills. Make a list of everything you do now and try to do them a bit each day.

The instructor doesn't expect people to arrive for the next course with all of those elements mastered. The first lesson of the season is (or should be) always a review of foundation skills. Everyone else from your rink/class is in the same boat, so you'll all be relearning together.

Try to get in a few practices at the hour-away rink, just to keep your skills in place. You can also practice off-ice, just be sure to do it safely - non-slip surfaces and proper shoes. Stay in shape - exercise and stretch twice a day, especially situps and crunches.
August 19th isn't too long. My rink was closed for about 8 months while they were building the new recreation center. Since you may not have the possibility of going to another rink, don't sweat it. Your muscles will remember everything that you've learned and on your first lessons you could be a little shaky, but really you shouldn't be too bad because your body will remember it. I have been off the ice for a year and a half, and I went skating twice, and I was doing pretty much everything that I had been doing before...the first time I was pretty shaky, but after a few minutes I was comfortable again, and even able to start doing spins, and jumps again. Don't worry about it too much...you have just a little over a month, and you should be fine! Good luck!
