Traditional Karate and all non-contact/semi-contact/Point Sparing Karate question?

I was just wondering, for people who train in these styles, how do you expect to be strong in a real fight if you have never fight full-contact? My mind just cant process why people dont train full contact, is there another way you condition your body to take punches? Iv seen some people from non-contact go into a full contact tournament and they just have a breakdown after the first hit and look like they want to run away and crawl into a corner somewhere

Im really curious, is it just the peoples mentality there that they just dont want to do full contact, or do they believ that its not neccessary? or what? whats the reason behind it? iv searched my brain and I cant see any reason you wouldnt train full contact in any art unless its like a one day seminar where you just learn some techniques which you do outside of your normal class, I seriusly feel that you might as well taking dancing classes instead of martial arts if you not not concistantly coming home with bruises

While in principle your statement is correct, no contact and semi contact are actually harder to perfect then full contact sparring. In a tournament setting a point is only scored if the blow comes within 1 inch or less of your opponents body, which requires a much higher degree of control. If a fighter can master this close-to-contact control then full follow through of a blow is second nature. I have seen far to many students in full contact tournaments who have little to no control, yet they score well simple because they can swing away all day long. Control, Finesse, Mental Focus and a Level Head are far more importent in a real world fight then the ability to swing your limbs around. i understand what your are saying but you have to understand that it has become a sport to these people. A SPORT. not a way of self defense. other than that, get in a ring with a good sport fighter, u wont be able to touch him. he will control the fight. but as far as practical usage... it has none, its just a sport (what pratical usage does football or basketball have? none)
actually i used to train and i went to tournaments and i was just fine. I love fighting and knowing that i can defend myself if i have to. But there are classes for those who just take traditional karate. most studios have sparring classes each week which you are paired up with someone in your age group and your level and you fight full contact this is how you apply what you learn and learn what it feels like when it hits an actual person and not a pad or a dummy. and what it feels like to be hit FULL CONTACT but some dont.sorry for the length hope this helps
I train in a "traditional" dojo.

*Fudokan karate (an eastern European offshoot of Shotokan).

*I really don't know why we don't do more sparring, except that our techniques, if executed correctly, really do maim or kill.

**Most martial arts can lay claim to this statement, which is why there are rules in tournament sparring, etc.

**There are no rules in the street, but , then, if all you have is kihon, then the execution of these techniques almost becomes a moot point (that is, you're screwed ...).

*I spar in non contact (light contact) tournaments (geriatric blackbelt division).

**My techniques are crisper, and deliver LOTS of force, even though I do my best to tone it down

***I don't want to get disqualified

***I can almost knock down my standing "BOB" bag while doing timed reps. -even though the stand is filled with H2O- to the point that I sometimes can't do as many successive reps. as I am capable of, etc.

*There's no substitute for human-to-human interaction in the "fight game", but there has to be a trade-off between execution and lethality in our Art.

*I spar outside of my dojo a few times per month (it's all I can afford, on my salary) with my sensei's blessing.

**It's uncanny how the trade-off between lethality and execution (sparring) manifests itself.

Bottom line?

*I enjoy the overall superior fitness, crispness of execution, and power/speed of delivery which I experience through the traditional dojo.

*I really look forward to the human-to-human interaction I get when I spar, and get to learn how to deliver my Art's techniques, albeit in a WAY nonlethal environment.

BIG FOOT!!!! You are absolutely right! There are several reasons why people don't condition/train for full-contact. ONE reason is because they don't feel they have to prove to themselves that they or they're art is effective. This is due to confidence, sometimes delusions. SECONDLY, some are just scared;they don't wanna bleed, cuts, bruises,or the unlikely event of death (very rare).THIRDLY,some just do not want to because MA is not about "beating or taking a beating." It's about inner peace. Yeah right,go get kicked in the head. I'm in
complete agreement with you. If you practice any MA, you should bleed, get cut, thrown, punched in the head, and occasionally break or dislocate a body part. If not, you're just a break dancin ballet artist.
