What exactly is mixed martial arts?

Can anyone explain to me exactly what is mixed martial art??? cuz i watched international fight league for the first time today and i was expecting to see like a whole bunch of kicks and different techniques and stuff, but it turned out to just be kind of like boxing. they were on the ground a little bit, but it looked like a mix of a little but of wrestliing and boxing. does anybody know where i can watch real martial arts on tv???

I guess you were watching two strikers which means they both liked to punch or kick. You could just as easily have seen two ground guys and thought the opposite. MMA used to mean they would take two people of different disciplines and have them fight. Now it means blending all martial arts together to be the best at fighting or close to it. If you want to watch MMA that's good quality watch UFC on Spike TV. Source(s): I love MMA
the same as UFC
not sure about watching martial arts on tv but I know that mixed martial arts is the combining of one or more martial art style. Bruce Lee was one of the founding fathers of mixed martial arts. He and Chuck Norris discovered that by combining techniques from different styles of martial arts one could both better defend themself as well as put out a greater offensive attack.
MMA) is a combat sport in which a wide variety of fighting techniques are used, including striking and grappling.

Modern mixed martial arts emerged in 1993 with the Ultimate Fighting Championship, based on the concept of pitting different fighting styles against each other in competition with minimal rules, in an attempt to determine which system would be more effective in a real, unregulated combat situation.[1] In the late 1990s and early 2000s, mixed martial arts competitions implemented additional rules for the safety of the athletes and to promote acceptance of the sport, while maintaining as much of the original no-holds-barred concept as possible. Since these changes, the sport has grown rapidly, to the point of setting pay-per-view records.
