What do you consider more important: Beating USA or winning International games against top ranked teams?

Fact: Mexico cannot beat USA in american soil.
Fiction: USA is better than Mexico just because they have won their last encounters.

Judging that a team, or their players, is better than another team based on their encounters against each other alone is, to ME, not enough to say that that particular team is better than the other. I mean, how many times have Chivas or America been playing awfully all season long, but when the 鈥淓l Clasico鈥?comes along, they end up beating the other team!

Need another example?

Mexico has beaten Brazil 6 of their 10 last encounters, and Brazil has only been able to beat them ONCE!
Does this mean that Mexico is better than Brazil? How absurd is that idea, hu?

So why is everyone going around saying that USA is better than Mexico?

Do you consider that a win against USA is a much better reward to all the work the players put into, or do you think that getting good results against top internationally ranked teams gives a better image?

to the one asking the question...

you're right, the end result is not always the best parameter for judgement, but its always the lasting impression we have. for the past 4 years, i've been watching real madrid, i thought they were the best year in and year out, but they didnt win anything in those 4 years. like i've said, when it comes down to it. people will be bias and say "well look who won the game". im for 1 am not like that, its just easier for the sake of not arguing with people.

no the point is, i've made this argument before in yahoo answers. was italy the best during WC2006, i dont think so. but they beat the teams they faced, so we like to call them the best, but there were tons of teams i thought were better. for instance, Ghana almost beat brazil and i thought they were cheated. its hard to argue with someone when they're ignorant, im not talking about you. there are a few pro-italian folks, and they are in love with Italy. great for them, but they can't get it in their head that just maybe, some other country could be better than them. but i still stand by my point by saying, on that day, if you win, you are better. on that day! looking at teams in general, US is a joke, im proud to be an american, but lets face reality, soccer is not our sport. no i dont think we are better than Mexico, but we did beat them, so we are better in that sense.

Fact, you beat the team, you are better. we can not base competition on anything else but the scoreline. if you want to base on records go right ahead. but most people like to base it on the pitch. on any given day, the team that wins, is the better team! any arguments?

these arguments have been dragged on and on. Italy beating France makes them better. case closed.

winning gives you the ultimate image. beating US, brazil, China, it doesnt matter. if you lose to the US( i guess youre making a case for Mexico) and end up beating brazil just leaves questions in the air. you can beat brazil, but you can't beat the US?? no consistency.
For what it's worth, I don't think "everyone" is saying the USA is better than Mexico. I haven't heard that at all, but that's just me. In the long run, I think a team that can beat (or at least hang with) the top international teams will get the respect they deserve.
One of my mexican friends asked if I thought the USA or Mexico were better. I put it like this the USA matches up well against mexico, but Mexico matches up better against the international elites like Argentina Brazil and others. The fact is USA may know how to defeat mexico mainly because of the many encounters we have, but our style of play is not the reason for it. General logic should tell you that if you can beat one team head to head than you are better, but this is one of those anomolies where it is not necessarily true.
just forget it this is just making the mexican fan look as if they trying to get glory for beating brazil we lost to usa just let it go and who really cares what other people think about mexico that just work as an advantage to us they think we don't play well but when its is time for the game they learn who is actually better and brazil is to us what usa is to mexico lol and i am mexican born and raised well raised ther for 5 years lol let just forget about the past games and focus on the upcoming one and the goal which is to take la copa american away from south america
Both are important. Winning Concacaf麓s tournaments are important because they will prove that Mexico is to be consider one of the top teams in world competition (statistically Mexico has played most of the international tournaments at stake and have given a very good impression).

Beating Brazil, Argentina and the like are also important mostly because the Mexican player has gotten a new attitude and no longer are to be considered the "green mice" or a team that is going to play with fear.

One game result should not the indicator for a team greatness and the statistics and how the team plays after a given period of time should be ones dictating how a team process should be qualified.

This is a very good question and hopefully a good thread will start (let麓s put aside the sarcasm, prejudice and the like) and hopefully all could learn that we enjoy this game, that we could give constructive criticism to whichever team we love. My point is, that regardless of who is coaching we might not agree how the team plays of who is defending the uniform.
ima make this sweet and easy and to the point! mexico wants to beat usa really bad more than any team!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
winning against the top ranked teams is much better than beating UNITED STATES as most European & South American teams are capable of beating them.
