Would buying a dirtbike help me learn to control my motorcycle better?

Mainly in crappy weather conditions or when I run into some sand on the road or something

While the techniques may be similar, dirtbikes get a lot of their rough terrain handling abilities from their knobby tires. If you try to handle your motorcycle with street tires like you would handle your dirtbike when you hit gravel you're asking to go down. The tires just can't grip the same.
Your best bet is to make sure you're always scanning for hazardous conditions in the road well ahead. If you see gravel, sand, oil, etc... slow down and keep the bike upright and avoid hard leans.
It may help but in most instances it carries different than the motorcycle. Your form is different the weight is different ect. practice is what makes a better driver and learning how to control your bike. also training classes work good too, they teach how to use controlled stopping such as slamming on your breaks at 20 mph and what to do. Or how to fall with your bike should a crappy condition occur. as for bad weather lower your speed and always keep good tires on your bike. Be a defensive driver and all ways keep your eyes open for sand or items such as dead animals and if traveling with others point it out to them too. So in answer to your question, no a dirt bike will not make you a better driver save your money.
I would have to say yes and no. First off, it would help but it would be expensive to buy the bikes just to practice on and them buy a motorcycle. From my experience as a rider I always grew up riding dritbikes and as I gew older I rode faster and more powerful bikes. Now at the age 21 I just bought my first real sportbike which is a 2004 Yahama r1. This bike is fast and something that you just don't want to jump on and go. You need to have practice with the clutch and the way that the bike is handled. For me riding those dirtbikes helped me a ton with the clutch and just the feeling of the bike and what happens when you hit the gas to hard or slam on the bike to hard. On the other hand motorcycles and dirtbikes have two different ways of reacting and the control that you have over them. To buy a dirtbike to help you improve your riding on a motorcycle is alittle far fetched but it could work. I know for me it did. Before you go buy a dirtbike I would maybe ride a friends or a family members before you go out and buy something on your own. Another question that you have to ask yourself about this is what type of dirtbike you would ride! Well I hope this helped and you learn soon how to ride a motorcycle better

best wishes to you
