Has NASCAR and Goodyear created an illegal monopoly on tires?

Wouldn't it be better racing if each team could make the choice of what brand of tire they use?

First, nascar is not a democracy and is not really about a contest of higher technology etc. If that is what you are looking for then follow F1. Nascar wants safe close consistent racing amongst the teams.
Second, nascar did allow hoosier tires many years ago. However, the reason for the change was that there was a sort of tire war that went on and since tire technology was not very advanced at the time even tire companies did exactly understand how to make good tires that are both groppy and last long. What ended up happening is that teams went to softer and softer compounds an did things like dipping tires in acid or treating them with chemicals to improve grip. This led to many more flat tires, blown tires, destroyed tires taht would happen all of a sudden during green flag racing causing big dangerous wrecks. So they said it was based on safety and parity amongst the teams.

I would welcome new tire manifacturers or more compunds b/c it adds an additional competitive element that if you chose a harder compund you could skip a pit stop maybe and change the racing dynamic.
I don't think it's illegal & Hoosier ran in cup races way back when .

Have a great day !
Many sports league dictate brands of equipment and apparel that the participants can use. In NASCAR especially it makes sense to cut down on the advantage that a richer team can have. And it certainly doesn't go to monopoly, since NASCAR doesn't have any effect on who else can by which tires.
Monopoly, yes, but there is nothing illegal about it. NASCAR has never been a democracy, in fact they broke an attempted driver's union headed by Richard Petty in the late 1960's. The main reason for using just one tire is for safety and consistency (not that the tires have been EITHER safe or consistent this year).
Have a GREAT day : )
There is nothing illegal about it.

First you need to understand how Business works. What I mean by this is that businesses all across the world make deals with each other in terms of partners and suppliers. If a Supplier (in this case Goodyear) makes a good enough offer to a Business (in this case NASCAR) then that business could give them exclusive rights for only using their product...depending on the contract agreement.

If other tire companies don't like it, then they could approach NASCAR with an even better deal/proposal when Goodyears contract expires.
I dont think so i think that when they use the same tire it truly equals up the playing field. In F1 you get to choose your tires and when you choose the tires during each race you can choose from there whether you want soft, hard, intermidieate and rain tires and it makles the competition uneven. I think that when you mandate the tire to every team it forces everyone to develop themselves around it and get used to it together so i dont think that anyone has a clear advantage in racing.
