Why is it called a "try" in Rubgy League?

both rugby codes use Try as a method of scoring. in the very first games of rugby you could only score points from converting the ball from a spot over the cross bar. You earned the oppertunity to 'Try' and kick for goal by carrying the ball over the 'Try-Line'.

i have no idea but maybe years ago you only got three points instead of four so they called it a tri ?
