Does jogging in cold weather affect your performance? |
Does jogging in cold weather affect your performance? I always run better in the cold. Can't say for sure if it really does, but I went jogging once on a cold night and I did feel a difference. I have asthma and it's never really acted up much before when I'd go, but that night I went it was pretty cold out. The asthma hit me really hard. So I think maybe it does make a difference because you know that in the cold your body is a little more weaker and stuff. I'd recommend going only in nice weather, or when you can feel that it's not so bad out. You also don't wanna catch a cold or something. Yes it does. The cold air is heavier and makes it more difficult for your lungs to inhale and exhale. Yes it does. Your body has to work harder to keep warm. It definitely affects your performance, but whether it's a negative or positive effect depends on you. Some people find cold weather difficult to inhale, so they have a harder time running. Also, you're body has to use more energy to keep warm, and the cold weather can make your muscles tight. On the other hand, you probably don't sweat as much in cold weather, so the chance of dehydration is less. Dehydration can also lead to decreased energy and tighter muscles. It kind of depends on you as a running and what conditions you are used to running in both physically and mentally. Yes, what everyone else said :) What do you consider cold? For California the 40's is cold. But that's an ideal temperature for running, more specifically 45 degrees. Elite marathoners want the cooler temperature for optimum performance, you want to limit sweating but not be too cold. Personally I like the 50's and 60's for running, anything above that I sweat too much and my performance goes down. Likewise, if it's too cold my body has to work harder to stay warm. |
