Is it ok to run 5 miles a day or should a take a break after each run? Effective training requires both stress and recovery. Training tears your body down in a controlled manner. During recovery, your body rebuilds and becomes stronger. The hard part about training is finding the correct balance between stress and recovery. Experienced runners vary their workouts. Even if they run every day, they vary the duration and intensity of the workouts, i.e. The do hard days and easy days. Recreational runners should do the same. Varying the duration may mean taking the day off or it may mean running slower or running a shorter distance or both. Even if your body can handle 5 miles per day 7 days a week, you get more benefit from the time spent training by doing more on one day and less on another day. Alternately, you could run 5 miles, 4 days a week and get the same physiological benefits with less training. That would free up time 3 days a week to do something else. Here is an article that describes the effects of monotony on training. http://www.pfitzinger.com/labreports/det... you should run more.... probably shouldn't, man. your muscles will not be able to rest which in turn will not allow them to grow right. you will also be more succeptable to pulls/tears. what you should do is go hard every other day....like 5 miles or so. on the between days maybe just a mile or two, if anything. if this isnt enough for you, run 6,7,8 hell 10 miles if you are up for it rather than 5, then the next day you wont wanna run. ran cross country 4 yrs in HS, 3 in college.....still run on average 20mi/week. RUN FOREST RUN It all depends on what your body is used too. If you just started running, don't do 5 miles a day. You'd have to work up to that, but if you've been running and your used to longer distances, go for it! But if you need a break.. take one, don't try to push it too far. take a break after each run because your muscles need to rest in order to improve |
